Be Stronger - Choose a Treadmill over ice and snow
Choose the Treadmill Over Ice and Snow
By Kate Zuser, Silver Mountain Sports Club Personal Fitness Coach
No one likes running outside on icy, snow covered trails. Make your way to the gym (or the basement) and plant yourself onto the treadmill to get in your milage for the day.
Do the following on the treadmill to mimic an outside run:
- Set incline at 1.5% and run 1 warmup mile. The pace should be easy enough to have a conversation. You should not be out of breath.
- With the incline at 1.5% (mimicking wind resistance and slight uphills outdoors) run mile 2 at a pace of 1 minute faster than your warm-up mile. So if you warmed up at a 9- minute mile pace, increase the speed to an 8- minute mile pace.
- For mile 3, create a hill. Set incline between 4.0% – 6.0%. Stay with your 8- minute mile pace for half of mile 3. Once you reach 3.50 mi, quickly change the incline down to zero, and boost your speed to get the feel of running down the hill that you just climbed. This will be the first time you lower the incline to zero since getting onto the treadmill. This will really feel like a downhill sprint due to the change.
