Play Longer - Presidential Active Lifestyle Award

The Presidential Active Lifestyle Award challenge will help you add physical activity to your life—and now, it will also help improve your eating habits. (That’s why it's called it PALA+.) Get active and eat better, and you’ll feel better, too. Plus, you’ll earn an award. Start the PALA+ challenge!
Is This For Me?
This challenge is for anyone, from students to seniors, but it’s geared toward people who want to set themselves on the road to a healthier life through positive changes to physical activity and eating behaviors.
Adults (that’s anyone aged 18 and older), your goals are:
  • Physical activity. You need to be active 30 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week, for 6 out of 8 weeks.
  • Healthy eating. Each week, you’ll also focus on a healthy eating goal. There are eight to choose from, and each week you will add a new goal while continuing with your previous goals. By the end of the six weeks, you’ll be giving your body more of the good stuff it needs.
Kids and teens (that’s anyone between 6 and 17 years), your goals are:
  • Physical activity. You need to be active 60 minutes a day, at least 5 days a week, for 6 out of 8 weeks.
  • Healthy eating. Each week, you’ll also focus on a healthy eating goal. There are eight to choose from, and each week you will add a new goal while continuing with your previous goals. By the end of the six weeks, you’ll be giving your body more of the good stuff it needs.
Starting the PALA will help you:
  • Commit to daily physical activity—and stick with it.
  • Commit to making healthier food choices—one goal at a time.
  • Set realistic goals to encourage fitness and healthy eating habits for a lifetime.
  • Track your progress with our free personal activity log, which you can access online after you create an individual account, or on a paper log.
  • Have fun! Yes, you need to be active every day, but participants can choose all kinds of activities to meet this goal—playing with the kids, gardening, walking, playing basketball, running, yoga, and more—all while fueling your body with nutritious foods.
Did Someone Say ‘Award’?
It’s easy to earn the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award. All it takes is a commitment to being active and healthier eating for 6 out of 8 weeks. Stick with the program and you’ll earn an award in less than two months. So what are you waiting for? Sign up today!

Live Healthy - President’s Challenge Adult Fitness Test

Do you ever wonder just how fit you really are? The President’s Challenge Adult Fitness Test can tell you!
Why take a fitness test?
If your response is, “Fit for what?” you are asking the right question. Physical fitness means different things to different people. Think of it as a grown-up version of our Physical Fitness Test. You’ll complete testing activities, enter your data online, and receive an evaluation.
The test covers:
  • Aerobic fitness—the ability of your heart and lungs to deliver blood to muscles
  • Muscular strength and endurance—whether you are strong enough to do normal activities easily and protect your lower back
  • Flexibility—the ability to move your joints through their proper range of motion
  • Body composition—whether you have too much body fat, especially around the waist
Your results may inspire you to become more active. You might even want to sign up for the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) or Presidential Champions challenge and then retake the test to see how your fitness has changed.
Visit AdultFitnessTest.org to get started.

Play Longer - Bernie's Story

During our recent New Year, New You Calorie Burn Challenge, Bernie Stabins became an unlikely star at Silver Mountain Sports Club.  While the challenge was to burn 12,500 or more calories over a 10 week period, Bernie took it on as way to show everyone that fitness isn't just for the young.  At 81 years old, Bernie was the oldest participant and the one who not only had the highest total documented calorie count but single handedly burned more calories, earning more points than the lowest 17 competitors combined!

Six days week, for more than two hours a day, Bernie was in the Kimball club doing both cardio and weight training.  His favorite piece of cardio equipment became the new Woodway Curve treadmill but he credited both Anna and Keri's spin classes for helping him achieve the highest calorie burn per hour.  When asked, Bernie shared that consistency was the key to his success.  "Just have an agenda and do it daily".  His advice to anyone who hasn’t been working out regularly?  “Make a commitment then get a trainer to learn a regime.  Share your commitment with someone else so they can hold you accountable to it”.

Bernie shared his thoughts with the rest of the competitors when the challenge ended.  Here is Bernie's story in his own words.

Hal La Lu Yah.

The NEW YEAR NEW YOU calorie contest is over>>>>>>>>>>>> Boy and am I happy...............................I came in 1st place recording a record !!!!!!!  197,087 points.  The 2nd best competitor recorded 116,595 points, I was ahead of her by 80,492 points.  The 3rd best competitor recorded 66,131 points, I was ahead of him by 130,956 points.

It was a wonderful experience for me. I lost 14 pounds. And I feel better now than I have in the past 10 years. The people at the gym were great; I also met some awesome people on the way. I'm going to continue to work out, I guess until I can't work out anymore.

Thanks for all your support.

Love you all.

Bernie. (Boompa)

You can see Bernie in action in the upcoming Park City Follies where he will be performing with other Silver Mountain Sports Club members and staff in the opening number.
